Appropriate Body (AB)

Suitable Post for Statutory Induction

A suitable post for statutory induction to take place must meet all DfE requirements (below) and allow an ECT to meet the government teacher standards which are ultimately the standards you would be assessing ECTs against during and throughout statutory induction.  Posts cannot be support staff i.e. HLTAs, TAs, LSAs, cover/cover supervisors etc

Additionally, an ECTs main scale teaching contract would need to be for a minimum equivalent to one term to be eligible as ECTs must be in post long enough to allow fair and effective assessment against the teacher standards, fully protect their entitlements and allow rigorous judgements to be made about their progress and ability as a teacher. Statutory induction remains a one-time only process that cannot be retaken and its therefore critical that induction is carefully executed, planned for and takes place in a stable environment i.e. not a mixture of roles and contracts, short-term/day-to-day supply and it’s important to note that statutory induction for part-time ECTs is completed on an FTE basis.

If all requirements cannot be met, please do not register ECTs for statutory induction via Mosaic or training provision with the DfE as part of the Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE)

A suitable post for induction:

2.18: In order for the ECT to serve induction the headteacher/principal and appropriate body must first agree that the post is suitable for this purpose. The headteacher/principal of the institution in which an ECT is serving an induction period, and the appropriate body, are jointly responsible for ensuring that the supervision and training of the ECT meets their development needs.

The duties assigned to the ECT, and the conditions under which they work, should be such as to facilitate a fair and effective assessment of the ECT’s conduct and efficiency as a teacher against the Teachers’ Standards.

A suitable post is expected to:

  • have a headteacher/principal in post who is able to make a recommendation about whether the ECT’s performance against the Teachers’ Standards is satisfactory.
  • have prior agreement with an appropriate body to act in this role to quality assure the induction process.
  • provide the ECT with a programme of training and support based on the ITTECF.
  • provide the ECT with the necessary employment tasks and experience of teaching whole classes, as well as with the necessary support to enable them to demonstrate satisfactory performance against the Teachers’ Standards throughout and by the end of the induction period.
  • include the appointment of an induction tutor who is expected to hold QTS (Not EYTS)
  • include the appointment of a designated mentor who is expected to hold QTS (Not EYTS)
  • provide the ECT with a reduced timetable to enable them to undertake activities in their induction programme
(In Year 1 this will be 10% ECT time and 10% PPA. In Year 2, it will be 5% ECT time and 10% PPA – this must be protected !)
  • not make unreasonable demands upon the ECT.
  • not normally demand teaching outside the age range and/or subject(s) for which the ECT has been employed to teach.
  • not present the ECT, on a day-to-day basis, with discipline problems that are unreasonably demanding for the setting.
  • involve the ECT regularly teaching the same class(es);
  • involve similar planning, teaching and assessment processes to those in which other teachers working in similar substantive posts in the institution are engaged in; and
  • not involve additional non-teaching responsibilities without the provision of appropriate preparation and support.

2.19: In addition, the governing body must be satisfied that the institution has the capacity to support the ECT and that the headteacher/principal is fulfilling their responsibilities.

.

If all requirements can be met, please ensure that your ECT is fully registered for statutory induction with an appropriate body and for training under the ECTE (formerly ECF programme)
