Appropriate Body (AB)

Extensions

Statutory induction may be extended if towards the end of a fully completed 2-year statutory induction period (FTE for part-time Early Career Teachers ECTs) and following additional support being put in place an ECT is not making the desired progress towards meeting the government teacher standards. If you believe with additional time and support they would be able to do so, you can apply to us for an extension to the statutory induction period. This could be for an additional 1 term, 2 terms etc and we would expect to have been informed well in advance that an ECT was experiencing difficulties during induction and additional support plans that have been/are in place provided to us.

Please note: it is not possible to apply for an extension to an individual term or year 1 of statutory induction, an extension can only be applied for towards the end of a fully completed 2-years if you believe your ECT has not yet fully met the teacher standards and may need additional time to be able to do so.

If you are looking to apply for extension please contact us at ab-induction@bright-futures.co.uk ideally at half-term of the final term and we will further advise and if required, arrange a visit to school or a meeting to discuss consequences of failure and options available to mitigate against such an outcome. Please note, we must never be informed on the last day of term (or after an ECT has left school), that you would like to apply for an extension ! Additionally, extensions are to be approved and made final by the appropriate body for statutory induction, not the school or HR. Schools/Trusts HR cannot make decisions about statutory induction.

.

Extensions due to absences – if during an individual year of statutory induction an ECTs absences exceed the DfE limit (30 days or more), an automatic extension will be applied to that year. As an example, if in year 1 of statutory induction an ECT has 45 days absent, year 1 will be automatically extended by 45 days if the ECT is staying with you and this must be completed in full before year 2 can start.

Days absent do not carry over from one fully completed year to the next.

If in year 2 of statutory induction absences again exceed the DfE limit, i.e. ECT has 45 days absent, an automatic extension to year 2 of 45 days will apply and must be completed in full if staying with you.

If an ECT is leaving you prior to completing days absent where an automatic extension has been applied to either year 1 or year 2, they would be required to complete a minimum of 1 full term in their next suitable post as the next inducting school would not be able to accurately or fairly assess an ECT against the government teacher standards and make a judgement about them in 45 days.
