Completing formal assessments

Completion of formal assessments are a statutory requirement under 2-year induction arrangements and when due, are to be completed online via Mosaic by the person at school registered as induction tutor (not mentor).

For full time ECTs, formal assessments will be completed at the end of each fully completed year e.g. one at the end of the 1st year and a final assessment and the end of year 2 (FTE for part time ECTs). We have provided below some guidance for completing formal assessments including example and naturally occurring evidence:

.

Formal assessments:

Formal assessments require the registered induction tutor (not mentor) provide descriptive evidence showing the progress an ECT has made, during the year reporting on, towards consolidating their ITT and meeting/embedding each element of the teacher standards including part 2, personal and professional conduct. Assessments are to be submitted to the appropriate body by the headteacher/principal and must be discussed with each ECT prior to final submission and copies also be provided to the ECT for comment and digital signature (online via Mosaic) – there must be no surprises

Formal assessments must also state clear development targets for the next period even if an ECT is leaving your school – the next school will want to know exactly where an ECT is up to with induction and have a clear starting point going forward, the same as you should expect if you were receiving an ECT who has partially completed induction elsewhere. This is also important if there have been significant absences that may trigger an automatic extension to statutory induction if they have exceeded the DfE limit (30 days or more) in an individual year.

You can view an example below which is in pdf format and is how they are generated once you complete them online and please note, it’s only an example and has been written taking into account the various settings where induction can take place so will not relate to your individual ECT, their progress/current stage of induction. Additionally, as they are formal assessments and not progress reviews, the head/principal, induction tutor and ECT are required to digitally sign them off via Mosaic once fully completed online.

Evidence of progress towards meeting the government teacher standards…

Over the course of the induction period, evidence from day-to-day practice as well as from specific development activities will build up to show how the ECT is making progress towards meeting/embedding the government teacher standards and induction tutors should regularly capture this evidence in preparation for completing formal assessments. The illustration below provides just some examples of naturally occurring evidence

.
NB: .ECTs are not responsible for assessing themselves and are not required to provide anything additional to the evidence that should be naturally occurring through their day-to-day practice which must be assessed by the induction tutor (not mentor)

.

Key points to remember when completing formal assessments:

  • Do refer to your ECT by their name when completing formal assessments (assessments are your recommendation about the ECT so should be written ‘about’ them, not ‘to’ them)
  • Do provide descriptive evidence showing how your ECT is meeting/embedding the teacher standards (not training)
  • Do keep assessments clear, concise and evidence based
  • Do include some development targets for the following period (relating to teacher standards) even if leaving you
  • Do meet with your ECT to discuss what you will be writing about them and seek their feedback
  • Do proof read your assessment for typos, spelling mistakes etc before discussion with your ECT
  • Do submit by the due date shown on Mosaic
  • Do put in place an additional support plan if you have concerns about an ECTs progress and ability to meet the teacher standards (Statutory)
  • Do not state ‘the ECT’, ‘the candidate’, ‘the student’, ‘the trainee’ – ECTs are qualified teachers hence being awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Do not use artificial intelligence (AI) to complete statutory induction assessments
  • Do not simply state ‘all met’ or provide one or two sentences against each of the teacher standards
  • Do Not list/bullet point evidence – it must be described
  • Do not answer ‘yes’ to every question in the ‘general’ section of assessments
  • Do not state an ECT is making ‘satisfactory’ progress meeting the teacher standards if you have concerns about their progress and ability to meet the teacher standards
  • Do not ask an ECT to complete it themselves – no part of an assessment should be a self-assessment by the ECT
  • Do not duplicate or provide a generic assessment
  • Do not name pupils in formal assessments

.

Statutory induction formal assessments will not be submitted to us for review and processing until fully completed by all parties at school level. For formal assessments this will be the Induction Tutor, ECT and Headteacher/Principal.

Automated email reminders are sent from Mosaic to registered email addresses informing of upcoming/due/overdue assessments – please read them as they are sent for a reason !
