If early engagement with your ECT will be possible before they start in post, you may wish to be proactive in getting a head start and consider the following;
.
When you first meet with or are aware you will have an ECT/during INSET, register for statutory induction via Mosaic and training provision with the DfE via their sign-in service. Both registration steps are mandatory and please remember, statutory induction cannot be backdated. Teacher status checks and/or information your school business manager/HR should have will provide the information you require to register ECTs. ECTs can also provide proof of qualifications, TRN number and QTS status and certificate from the government access your teaching qualifications service.
.
You might find it helpful to spend some time before an ECT starts induction with you identifying their professional strengths and any targets for the upcoming induction period.
If an ECT is joining you from university having completed their ITT, this could include asking them for their career entry development plan/profile. If they have partially completed statutory induction at another school, this will be requesting copies of their previous reviews and formal assessments from the appropriate body. These reviews and assessment should contain development targets which you can use as a starting point for structuring the induction period with you.
If early engagement is possible, it would be useful to provide the ECT with information about the institution, pupils and key staff. Information that could be shared early may cover:
.
In the first few days of post or before, if possible, they will also need to know certain processes and procedures at school, as an example;
As each school will have policies for whole school issues, ECTs should be provided with these if not prior to starting in post, certainly in the first few days.
